Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has revealed that he’s been suffering with an Achilles problem since the start of the season.
The 26-year-old started Switzerland’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Gibraltar on Sunday night but could only manage 74 minutes before being replaced by Ruben Vargas in a comfortable 4-0 victory.
Denis Zakaria, Admir Mehmedi, Ricardo Rodriguez, Mario Gavranovic all found the net for Switzerland at the Stade Tourbillon in Sion.
Xhaka suffered bruising to his lower back and leg in Arsenal’s opening match of the Premier League campaign against Newcastle and missed their next game at home to Burnley.
Though Xhaka has started every match since, he claims that he has been playing through the pain with an Achilles injury.
‘I’ve been suffering from Achilles tendon pain for a few weeks now. I felt it during the game,’ he said following Switzerland’s win. ‘It hurts now, but it should be okay otherwise.’
Xhaka was widely criticised for his performance in the north London derby after a clumsy challenge on Son Heung-min allowed Harry Kane to double Tottenham’s lead.
The former Borussia Monchengladbach star defended his display at the Emirates, with Gary Neville one of the many pundits to slam him for his ‘disgraceful’ tackle on Son.
Asked about Neville’s strong words following the 2-2 draw, Xhaka told Swiss publication Blick: ‘It’s part of football, there are a lot of people that talk a lot.
‘I cannot influence anything and I do not want to. It is not my business. ‘My job is to perform on the pitch.’
He added: ‘I know that I made a mistake in the penalty. ‘But nobody talks about the many opportunities we have made, only about the mistakes.’
