Henrikh Mkhitaryan has revealed he pushed to leave Arsenal due to concerns over a lack of game time and a belief he did not suit the Premier League.

The midfielder left Arsenal for Roma earlier this month, joining the Italian club on the final day of the European transfer window.

The 30-year-old had previously been with the Gunners since January 2018 after arriving as part of the deal that saw Alexis Sanchez go to Manchester United.

However, Mkhitaryan felt now was the right time to leave Arsenal as he feared his game time would be limited this season.

“I knew I was not going to play a lot – maybe I would sit on the bench, like I did the last three games before the international break,” said Mkhitaryan.

“I knew here I would have more opportunity to play, because there is the league, the cup, the Europa League.

“The decision was not easy for Arsenal to let me go, but thanks to Roma’s sporting director and board they were able to do it and hopefully I can show why they wanted to do that.”

Mkhitaryan arrived at Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund in July 2016 as the Bundesliga Player of the Season after scoring 23 goals and claiming 32 assists.

However, the midfielder has failed to hit those heights in the Premier League and that also impacted his decision to leave Arsenal.

“I think maybe I was not fitting so well in English football, so I think a change was good,” said Mkhitaryan.

“I’ve heard from many, many players that the Italian league is great, the football is great. The last month at Arsenal I was not getting pleasure, so that’s why I said it was better to come to Roma and to get happy and to get the pleasure from playing football again.”
