Unai Emery will reportedly name his five Arsenal captains in the next week, with the club still not having an official club captain going into their fifth Premier League game of the season.
Emery has operated a system at the Emirates since joining the Gunners of having five leaders among his squad, players who he picks specifically for their personalities to be role models among the group.
Emery has still not named his group of five captains however, and a number of fans are growing restless and frustrated by the situation.
Taking to Twitter, several Arsenal fans vented about the captain situation, with no other Premier League side operating in the same way.
From a neutral perspective, Emery’s approach doesn’t make a lot of sense. For younger players on the field and at the training ground, you want to have that one leader (and maybe a second as a vice captain) who you can go to if you need advice or guidance. Five people seems to me to be too much, because you risk conflicts and indecision from different opinions.
Emery should appoint one captain, and a vice captain to support his main leader. Other than that, everything else becomes unnecessary and wasted energy.
