Arsenal players ‘don’t trust’ one member of Unai Emery’s squad who is ‘fragile

David Luiz has flattered to deceive since joining Arsenal from Chelsea over the summer.

David Luiz is a ‘fragile centre-back’ who will cost Arsenal dearly in the future.

That’s the opinion of former Leeds United and Coventry hitman Noel Whelan, who ‘can’t believe’ Arsenal boss Unai Emery opted to solve his defensive crisis by signing the Brazilian – who gave away a penalty in the Gunners’ 2-2 draw with Watford last weekend.

During an interview with Football Insider, Whelan said: “David Luiz is not the answer for Arsenal. He’s brilliant on the ball, but more of a footballer than a defender.”

During his time at Chelsea, Luiz was renowned for his rash decision making and poor positioning, the latter of which often stemmed from him going walkabouts.

And Whelan believes the former Paris Saint-Germain star’s new team-mates don’t trust him.

He added: “The dressing room don’t trust him, you could see that yesterday. There’s been so many times he’s let his team down with poor defending and decision-making, he’s a fragile centre-back.

“If Frank Lampard thought David Luiz could have done a sound job for him this season, there’s no way he would have sold him to Arsenal.  Lampard has seen enough of him to know he has better defenders at Chelsea, who he can rely on to do a job for him.”

Arsenal fans are currently worried about the team’s first-choice centre-back partnership following their collapse against Watford.

Like Luiz, Sokratis was also at fault for one of Watford’s goals, carelessly passing the ball into the path of Gerard Deulofeu – who teed up Tom Cleverly to fire home.

The Greece international apologised to Gunners fans after the match, saying: “It was my mistake for something simple that I don’t have to do. This was the problem why we lose the three points.

“This is all about our responsibility and we have to do better. It was my mistake and without my mistake, we would take three points. The other guys tried their best. I don’t have to do this mistake.”

Arsenal will be back in action on Thursday evening (5.55pm), travelling to Germany to take on Eintracht Frankfurt in their first Europa League group game of the season.
