Ainsley Maitland-Niles insists Arsenal should have abandoned Unai Emery’s instructions against Watford and has questioned Granit Xhaka’s assertion that his team were ‘scared’ during their second half capitulation.

Emery’s side have failed to build on an impressive summer transfer window and an encouraging start to the new campaign which saw a new-look team win its first two matches against Newcastle and Burnley.

Arsenal were subsequently well beaten at Anfield and dropped two points at home against north London rivals Tottenham, but looked on course for three points at Vicarage Road on Sunday after two quickfire Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang goals helped establish a two-goal cushion before the interval.

Emery’s side caused their own downfall in the second period, constantly inviting pressure by attempting to play out from the back, a tactic that backfired in spectacular fashion when an errant pass from Sokratis Papastathopolous gifted Tom Cleverley a chance to drag Watford back into the contest.

Xhaka, who is likely to be appointed as one of Emery five captains this week, claimed none of his teammates was willing to take responsibility in a second half dominated by the Hornets, who grabbed a deserved equaliser through Roberto Pereyra’s penalty.

Maitland-Niles, who created Aubameyang’s second goal, disagreed with Xhaka’s version of events but believes Arsenal should have been streetwise enough to have mixed up their game-plan.
