Unai Emery continues to give youth a chance at Arsenal and Joe Willock could be the one to breakthrough this year
Unai Emery has been urged to consider offering youth more of a chance after watching his established stars falter against Watford.
The Gunners surrendered a two-goal lead at Vicarage Road and Jermaine Jenas believes Emery already has a gem in his squad.
Arsenal are fortunate to have several promising players in their ranks in likes of Reiss Nelson and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
But Jenas reckons Joe Willock is the pick of the bunch and labelled the 20-year-old as the most exciting prospect in the Premier League.
“I am going to go with Joe Willock (as the most exciting young player),” said Jenas on BBC Match of the Day.
“He is powerful, a good runner and he has played a bit deeper at times, but I watched him when he came on in the final in the Europa League against Chelsea – and he could have scored then.
“I think Arsenal have got a good one there. I would play him, I think he should be in their team on a regular basis.”
Willock came on for Dani Ceballos after an hour against Watford to make his fourth appearance of the season.
He has started on three occasions with Emery gradually integrating young players into his Arsenal starting XI.
Willock only signed a new long-term deal recently and has cited his manager’s willingness to put faith in him as a major reason in his decision.
The 20-year-old faces plenty of competition to establish himself in Arsenal’s midfield.
Granit Xhaka and Matteo Guendouzi begun the game against Watford with Willock and Lucas Torreira coming off the bench.
Loanee Dani Ceballos can also play in a deeper role if required while Mesut Ozil remains at Arsenal despite Emery clearly undecided on German.
