Calum Chambers says Arsenal are working hard in training to fix their defensive woes.

The Gunners edged past Aston Villa 3-2 in a thrilling encounter at the Emirates yesterday.

Gabon international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang bagged a late winner from a brilliant free kick.

Sloppy Arsenal defending had gifted Villa two goals.

Chambers – who spent last season loan at Fulham – admitted the north Londoners need to take better control of games.

“We recognise that and are working on it,” he said.

Speaking after the game, Unai Emery defended skipper Granit Xhaka who faced jeers from the Arsenal faithful when he was withdrawn.

“My opinion is we need our supporters and we need our supporters helping each player,” he said.

“Today I changed him because he played 90 minutes on Thursday.

“I preferred a fresh player. But for me he is a very important player for us.

“He has a big commitment here. I am sure he is going to achieve the best things.

“We are professional. He is an experienced player.

“He knows sometimes we are criticised. We need to be mature and continue working. I am going to support him. He’s a good player.”

Arsenal face Manchester United on September 30.

The Red Devils lost to 2-0 to West Ham yesterday as pressure builds on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
