Olympique Lyonnais have Arsene Wenger on a shortlist of two managers to replace Sylvinho, according to reports in France.
Le Parisien (via GFFN) report that Arsene Wenger and Laurent Blanc are Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas’ primary targets to replace Sylvinho as their manager.
Sylvinho left Lyon after just one win in nine matches and a derby defeat to Saint-Etienne, thanks in part to a clean sheet from Arsenal loanee William Saliba. So an Arsenal player ended the managerial spell of an ex-Arsenal player to put an ex-Arsenal manager in line for the job.
Wenger was at a gala dinner on Monday, receiving an award at the Nordoff Robbins Legends of Football event. He admitted to Sky Sports that he doesn’t want to stop working, but he has turned down offers to manage in the Premier League due to his Arsenal connection.
“I’m an Arsenal man and after that, I’m a professional. I can’t stop working,” Wenger said. “I decided to move out of the Premier League because I am too linked with Arsenal. I had opportunities to work in England but I turned them down.
“I don’t want to tell you [which clubs] because there are people in charge and it would unfair to them.”
There has been some speculation linking Wenger to the job as manager of Manchester United, particularly with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in such poor form. It seems the Frenchman is set to stick to what he’s always said about managing another club in England though, so United will have to look elsewhere.
As for Lyon, there’s nothing stopping Wenger from working for them. It’s just whether he wants to.
