Arsenal are weighing up a move for Scunthorpe United teenager Joey Dawson, a report from The Sun has claimed.
The 16-year-old midfielder became the youngest senior player in Scunthorpe’s history earlier this season, when he came off the bench to play the last 16 minutes of his side’s 1-0 defeat to Championship outfit Derby County in the first round of the Carabao Cup in August.
While that is his only senior appearance so far in his career, Dawson has also been named on the bench for Scunthorpe in five of their League Two games so far this season.
Despite that lack of senior experience, it seems Dawson has already attracted significant attention in his career, with the Gunners apparently keen on a move for the midfielder, who is the nephew of former Tottenham defender Michael Dawson.
It has been a difficult start to the season for Scunthorpe, with their 3-0 victory over Northampton Town on Saturday just their second league win of the season, leaving them 22nd in the fourth tier standings.
While Arsenal have given first-team opportunities to plenty of youngsters already this season, making the step up from League Two strugglers Scunthorpe to the Gunners would be a massive step for Dawson to take at such a young age.
Even so, this is the sort of opportunity that many players his age would give anything for, and you imagine he will surely jump at this chance should it materialise.
Indeed, given Scunthorpe’s position, it does seem to be a big compliment to Dawson that he is being linked with a move to a club the size of Arsenal right now.
