Welsh legend John Toshack is on the cover of Spanish magazine Libero’s latest edition.
The former Cardiff City, Liverpool and Swansea City player has given them a long interview, with a teaser being available on their website.
After his career as a player, Toshack worked in Spain for many years, having managed the likes of Real Sociedad, Real Madrid, Deportivo La Coruña, and Real Murcia. That’s why he speaks fluent Spanish, making the chat a lot more comfortable.
He’s had a lot to say about the Santiago Bernabeu side, and actually brought some interesting information about the time they signed Nikolas Anelka from Arsenal.
“I remember that Wenger was the manager of Arsenal and I had a conversation with him because Anelka wanted to leave, but a very strange thing happened,” Toshack told Líbero.
“When I saw what Madrid paid for Anelka, it wasn’t what I understood. I was left… (astonished face). What I had agreed was considerably less than that amount. There’s something not… Weird things happened.”
Anelka left Arsenal for Real Madrid in 1999. He stayed in the Spanish capital for only one year, scoring just seven goals in 33 appearances.
Then he returned to Paris Saint Germain, before spells at Liverpool, Manchester City, Fenerbahce, Bolton Wanderers, Chelsea, Shanghai Shenhua, Juventus, West Brom and Mumbai City.
