Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi is hoping to make his debut for the France senior side this week after being called up to the squad by Didier Deschamps.
Guendouzi has been included in the squad for the upcoming internationals against Moldova and Albania, after Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi was forced to withdraw through injury.
As a result, the 20-year-old could now make his senior bow for France, having stepped up from the under-21 squad.
This is the second time that Guendouzi has been called up to the senior squad as an injury replacement, having also been called up earlier this season when Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba was forced to withdraw through injury.
Speaking in a press conference at France’s Clairefontaine training base this week, Deschamps explained his decision to hand Guendouzi call-up.
“Matteo has been here before,” he said.
“We are in a similar situation here as we were in last September when he replaced Paul Pogba.
“Matteo is on top with his club and with the U21s. We are in a position of continuity on this subject matter. He is a young player with strong potential even if he has yet to have any playing time with us.”
While Guendouzi will be desperate to win his first senior cap, one player is almost certain to play is Kylian Mbappe.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward is set to make his 34th appearance for his country against Moldova on Thursday.
Mbappe was pictured with Guendouzi in training ahead of the game, and some Arsenal supporters took to social media to post some tongue-in-cheek messages.
One posted: ‘Guendouzi staying behind after training to coach young players,’ whilst another fan wrote: ‘Future Ballon D’or winner and Kylian Mbappe in one photo.’
