Barcelona are upset at losing out to Arsenal in the race to sign Gabriel Martinelli, according to reports.
The Gunners landed the 18-year-old from Brazilian side Ituano in a £6 million deal this summer and the forward has been quick to make an impact for Unai Emery’s side. Martinelli has made nine appearances for Arsenal so far but he’s scored seven goals, including two in the 5-5 thriller against Liverpool in their Carabao Cup clash at Anfield last month.
Before his move to Arsenal, Martinelli had a trial at Manchester United while he also spent time at Barcelona’s La Masia academy earlier this year.
But the Spanish champions decided against signing Martinelli, which allowed Arsenal to move in and secure a deal for the striker.
And according to Mundo Deportivo, Barca’s hierarchy are unhappy that they let Martinelli slip through the net, especially as he passed through their own academy just a few months before he opted to join the Gunners. Martinelli’s performances for Arsenal have also been praised by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
‘He’s really unbelievable,’ Klopp said earlier this month. So young, looks so mature already, is a proper threat. Yeah, he looks like a really decent player.’
David Luiz has also hailed Martinelli’s attitude since he made the move to Arsenal in the summer.
‘I always say, talents, I have seen many, but great mentality, I didn’t see many,’ Luiz told 90min. ‘And who arrives far? It’s great mentality, not just talent.
‘I’m not going to say to you about who is the most talented, but the best mentality at the moment is Martinelli. ‘He has a great mentality, especially because I know Brazilians at 18 years old.
‘He’s a top guy, a top player, but what makes me more impressed is the mentality in the training ground, the way he reacts after he scores goals.’
