Arsenal are closing in on naming Mikel Arteta as their manager after holding talks at their former captain’s house yesterday. However, the Gunners have come under fire for turning their nose up at Carlo Ancelotti.

The Italian flew into London this morning to complete a deal with Everton which will see him succeed Marco Silva.

However, former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara cannot believe the Gunners are not making a move for Ancelotti.

The 60-year-old has a proven pedigree at managing some of the greatest players of all time and he has three Champions League medals to boot.

O’Hara thinks the financial cost of hiring and firing Unai Emery in just over a year may have an influence.

“They probably thought Arteta wasn’t ready for the Arsenal job so they went with Unai Emery,” O’Hara told talkSPORT.

“This is probably why they’re staying away from Ancelotti here because they don’t want to do another Unai Emery here.

“If they get another proven manager and it doesn’t work out then they are in the same situation again.

“They are probably thinking let’s get Arteta in now and let’s give him the tools.

“I think the reason Arsenal are going for him is because he is going to be cheap, not going to cost a lot.

“They haven’t got any money to spend and he will work with what they have got.

“Ancelotti will want big money which Everton can give him and he is going to want a transfer kitty. Arsenal aren’t going to do that.”

Manchester City bosses were supposedly frustrated that Arteta met with Arsenal chiefs.

However, Guardiola has this morning revealed he was “aware” that talks were taking place.

“He was incredibly honest and transparent with me,” Guardiola said of Arteta.

“The club is always live. People today and then maybe tomorrow not here. Now he is part of our group and staff and stays here.

“When we have any new news I will know it and you will know it. He trained today and that’s all.

“When we so smart to pick him up and other clubs want him.

“He’s an incredible person. A good manager, good work ethic that’s why he’s with us.

“He’s talking with Arsenal so I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
