The Arsenal star has been linked with a move away in January, with Turkish Super Lig side Fenerbahce among the clubs named as potential suitors for the German midfielder

The January transfer window is now less than two weeks away – and the future of Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil is once again the subject of speculation.

The German playmaker has been linked with a move away in the past, with Ozil finding his game time limited under former boss Unai Emery.

He has played in recent matches under interim head coach Freddie Ljungberg, but with former Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta on the verge of being appointed in north London, there are once again question marks over his future.

Ozil may find himself in and out of the team again under Arteta , with the Spaniard having worked under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, where a 4-3-3 formation has predominantly been used.

But reports in Turkey suggest that Ozil could be on his way out of Arsenal next month.

Below, we take a look at the latest on the 31-year-old’s future.

Fenerbahce loan deal

Not for the first time, Mesut Ozil has been linked with a move to Turkey.

Fenerbahce and Galatasaray have both previously been linked with signing Ozil, and according to Turkish publication Fotomac , Fenerbahce are keen for him to join on a loan deal next month.

According to the report, Ozil would join Fenerbahce on loan for 18 months, with the deal expiring at the end of the 2020/21 season, when his current contract at Arsenal is set to expire.

‘Talks’ in London

According to the Turkish newspaper, Fenerbahce sporting director Damien Comolli was in London last week to discuss a deal for Ozil, with talks reportedly held in the capital.

As a result, the Turkish publication claims a deal is now “very close” for Ozil to join the club in January.

Fenerbahce currently sit fifth in the Turkish Super Lig.

Arsenal’s stance

With Mikel Arteta expected to be appointed as the new Arsenal head coach, the Daily Star states that funds will be limited in the New Year – but two major departures are planned.

According to the report, a major focus will be offloading high earners who are not pulling their weight, with Shkodran Mustafi and Mesut Ozil highlighted as the two leading candidates to be offloaded.

Ozil has not been in good form since signing a lucrative new deal in January 2018 and next year is the last window when the Gunners can get a decent fee for his services, as that contract is due to expire in 2021.

Ozil has played 11 times for the Gunners this season in all competitions, but is yet to score a goal.

His last appearance came in the 3-0 defeat against Manchester City on Sunday, with Ozil substituted early in the second half. He was met with boos from some supporters though as he slowly made his way off the pitch, with the German then showing his frustration by kicking his gloves as he left the field.

Meanwhile, Arsenal moved to distance themselves from Ozil’s social media comments last week regarding the treatment of the Muslim Uighur community, which led to the Gunners’ game with Manchester City not being broadcast in China by the CCTV network.

In a post on their Weibo profile, which has more than five million followers and is targeted at Asian supporters, Arsenal spoke out about the situation.
