Arsenal are weighing up a move for Thomas Lemar in January, according to reports. Lemar was a major transfer target for Arsene Wenger before the end of his reign and was close to joining Premier League rivals Liverpool before eventually signing for Atletico Madrid in 2018.
The Frenchman has struggled to make the grade at Atletico, however, and is being tipped as a potential exit from Spain in January.
ESPN claim Arsenal are monitoring developments and consider him an option in attack despite his issues at Atletico.
Lemar is yet to score or provide an assist this season in 21 appearances and is a regular on the Atletico bench.
The 24-year-old has been linked with a return to France and Lyon have been credited with an interest in Lemar, who could be available at a knockdown price due to his form in Spain.
Atletico reportedly paid over £50million to Monaco to sign Lemar and the forward is under contract at the club until 2023. Mikel Arteta is not expected to be given a big transfer budget for January after Arsenal’s busy summer.
The new head coach refused to give any details about his January plans, but insisted he was due to talk to club chiefs about transfers.
‘We had many other conversations,’ confirmed Arteta. ‘We have a meeting soon and some ideas but we have to put them together.’
