Englishman underwent surgery on Thursday, and now Gunners will look to add a new centre-back to their squad in the coming month. The Netherlands international has emerged as one of their top targets, although Blues star in pole position to re-sign the centre-back.
Frank Lampard’s side have an agreement in place with relegation-threatened Bournemouth where they can bring the defender back to Stamford Bridge for £40m. That clause should also allow Arsenal to get him for the same price.
Everton, Man City and Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in a deal for Nathan, who can even fill in at left-back and play in the holding role in midfield. Aware landing Ake could be tricky, Gunners are keeping their options open. Red Bull Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano is another player being considered.
The 21-year-old defender has a release clause that drops to £50m at the end of the campaign, but Gunners would be forced to offer more than that in winter. He may also be difficult to land given Leipzig are top of the Bundesliga and in the last-16 of the Champions League, where they will face Jose Mourinho’s Spurs.
Juventus’ Daniele Rugani is another centre-back on their shortlist. He would be a cheaper option than the Dutch defender and Upamecano.
