The agent of Shakhtar Donetsk star Mykola Matviyenko has revealed the defender has been approached by Arsenal regarding a transfer.
Arsenal are short on options at the back following the long-term injury sustained by Calum Chambers , and are in the market for reinforcements.
A number of players have been linked with a move to the Emirates, but it appears discussions over Matviyenko are further ahead than other targets.
Yuriy Danchenko – who represents the 23-year-old – told Ukrainian media: “Recently, my colleagues and I have been constantly in contact with representatives of the Arsenal, and have had meetings.
“The Gunners’ hierarchy have already contacted [Shakhtar], and we hope that these negotiations will succeed.”
Matviyenko is an established member of Shakhtar’s first-team squad, and featured in both of their Champions League ties against Man City earlier this season.
The centre-back has also made 20 appearances for Ukraine since his first call-up in 2017, and is set to be involved at Euro 2020.
And it seems he is keen on a switch to north London, after he liked a post on Instagram which asked fans whether they wanted to see Matviyenko complete a move to the Gunners.
The post read: “Arsenal wants to carry out a transaction to buy Matviyenko by February 1st.
“Do you want this transfer to be done this winter?”
Matviyenko’s personal account was clearly listed below the post, suggesting he has his heart set on joining Mikel Arteta’s side.
Arsenal are also looking to reward youngster Gabriel Martinelli by trebling his wages, following his impressive start to life at the club.
Martinelli scored a brilliant solo goal against Chelsea on Tuesday to take his tally to 10 for the season so far.
The 18-year-old only joined Arsenal in the summer, but has already attracted interest from Real Madrid .
Arteta wants to keep hold of the striker – who is contract until 2024, and the Mail report Arsenal will offer the player a pay rise from £10,000 a week to around £30,000.
