Konstantinos Mavropanos earned comparisons with Arsenal team-mate Sokratis for the passionate celebrations he displayed after saving a goal for his loan side Nuremburg against Heidenheim.
When one of the home side’s players burst through the Nuremburg defence to collect a perfectly-weighted pace, there seemed little doubt a goal was on the cards.
But as the striker slid the ball past the goalkeeper, Mavropanos put the afterburners on and managed to chase it down and clear it to safety literally inches before it crossed the line.
The Arsenal defender, who joined the Bundesliga 2 outfit on loan last month, slid into the net due to his lung-bursting efforts but swiftly jumped up to celebrate.
Mavropanos, 22, was then embraced by his goalkeeper for keeping Heidenheim at bay – although the game did end 2-2.
“That’s a celebration Sokratis would be proud of,” commented one Gooner.
“Lmao that cele just reminds me so much of Sokrati,” added a second fan.
“He wasn’t celebrating, he was yelling at his teammates for being s**t and letting it happen in the first place,” replied another.
“His pursuit line is very intelligent,” added a third fan. “Once the man was past the defensive line, he immediately closes down the center of the goal was his keeper moves forward rather than the man on the ball.
“Too often I see centre backs continue to chase the man down.”
Since Mavropanos’ arrival during the German leagues’ winter-break, his side are unbeaten, picking up two wins and a draw.
Friday night’s 2-2 draw away to fourth-placed Heidenheim, leaves Nurnberg 13th in the table.
“Looks like he’s recovered from that groin injury just fine. We’re looking good at CB if his form and confidence continue to improve….” added one rather hopeful Arsenal fan.
The Gunners also have William Saliba waiting in the wings.
The highly rated centre-back is spending the season on loan at Saint-Etienne and will return to the Emirates outfit in the summer.
Arsenal face Newcastle tomorrow, with Mikel Arteta still set to decide on a partner for David Luiz in central defence.
