Arsenal are interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen centre back Jonathan Tah this summer, according to reports from Germany.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has prioritised upgrading his central defensive options for next season and sees 24-year-old Tah as a legitimate transfer target.
Tah has racked up a wealth of top level experience in Germany, having made 210 appearances and won nine caps for Germany.
And according to head of football at SportBILD Christian Falk, Arsenal are giving serious consideration to activating his £33m release clause.
In August 2013, Tah became the youngest debutant ever to pull on a Hamburg shirt and he has gone on to become the bedrock Bayer Leverkusen who finished fourth in the Bundesliga last season.
“Jonathan has come on leaps and bounds at Leverkusen, he’s surpassed all expectation and now ranks as one of Germany’s best defenders,” said Bayer sporting director Rudi Völler last month, after Tah penned a three-year contract extension through to summer 2023.
“It’s no surprise that he’s interesting so many top clubs, but he knows what he has at Leverkusen and wants to continue his current trajectory.
“Jonathan is quick, technical and tough,” enthused Völler. “He can still improve in all areas, but we know how important he’s going to be for us.”
Tah was snapped up by Hamburg at the age of 13 and fast-tracked through the ranks of the Bundesliga’s only ever-present founding member.
Arsenal, meanwhile, are looking to offload error-prone Shkodran Mustafi this summer in the hope of raising some cash for incoming transfers.
Highly-rated defender William Saliba, who was signed last summer for £27m but loaned back to Saint-Etienne, will become part of Arteta’s squad next season.
The Gunners travel to Greece to continue their Europa League campaign tomorrow, with the first leg of the Round of 32 tie against Olympiacos taking place in Athens (8pm).
Arsenal returned to action following their winter break with a thumping 4-0 victory over Newcastle at the Emirates on Sunday.
