Former Manchester United star Paul Ince has praised Mikel Arteta for resurrecting the career of David Luiz. The experienced Brazil international joined Arsenal in the summer from Chelsea having been deemed surplus to requirements by Frank Lampard.
Luiz started his Arsenal career with a string of error-strewn performances which appeared to vindicate Lampard’s judgement, but the appointment of Arteta, following the sacking of Unai Emery, has coincided with a return to form for the 32-year-old.
Arsenal kept their third clean sheet in succession in midweek following a 1-0 win over Olympiacos and Ince has been impressed by the way in which Luiz appears to have taken on additional responsibility and become one of the leaders in Arteta’s resurgent team. He said: ‘You look at David Luiz, he was terrible under Unai Emery.
‘You look at him now and all of a sudden leadership he’s pulling people in saying well done, well done ‘He wasn’t doing that before, he looks like an impostor now.
‘But this is what Arteta demands from him, if you are going to be in that central role you are going to have to show leadership ‘That’s what he’s doing. It’s not just the work they are doing on the pitch it’s what goes on off it too. When it all comes together you will see a proper Arsenal team. ‘
