Serie A club Napoli wanted to sign Lucas Torreira recently, and the player was open to a move, but Mikel Arteta is changing his mind.
The Telegraph report there were ‘genuine concerns’ about the future of Lucas Torreira and a possible exit to Napoli when Mikel Arteta first took over.
The Serie A club held an interest in the Arsenal midfielder, who previously played in Italy with Sampdoria. Meanwhile, Torreira was open to their advances after months of Unai Emery playing him out of position.
Thankfully, Arteta turned things around in the last couple of months. For a start, he moved Torreira back to his favoured position. He also gave the midfielder at least 45 minutes in every league game since taking over (the full 90 in five of the seven).
As a result, the Telegraph now claim Torreira is confiding in friends that he’s happier and more comfortable in North London.
Despite his troubles under Emery at the start of the season, Torreira is still a key player for Arsenal. No one has made more appearances than him, though Matteo Guendouzi is level on 29 games.
The Uruguayan is still just 24 years old. He has a contract lasting another three-and-a-half years. The best should still be yet to come.
