Jurgen Klinsmann has admitted he wanted to bring both Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski to Hertha Berlin in January.

There was much speculation around Mesut Ozil’s future during the January transfer window but his agent has repeatedly said the player wasn’t going anywhere. And that’s exactly what happened.

Lukas Podolski, meanwhile, was available for free and ended up signing for Antalyaspor.

Klinsmann was in charge of Hertha Berlin for just 10 weeks, taking over on 27 November 2019 and announcing on Facebook he was stepping down on 11 February 2020, just last week. He claimed a lack of support and trust from the club was behind his decision.

“We were on a good path and despite difficult games had moved six points away from the relegation spots. I am totally convinced that Hertha will stay up,” Klinsmann said in his statement.

“But for that task to be completed, as head coach I need the trust of all those involved. In the fight against relegation unity, solidarity and concentration are the key elements. If they are not guaranteed then I cannot deliver on my full potential as a coach and cannot live up to my responsibilities.”

During the winter window no team, globally, spent more than the €77m Hertha splashed on new players.

It is not clear if his inability to sign Mesut Ozil from Arsenal played any role in his decision.
