Robbie Burton says it was a shock for people at Arsenal when he decided to leave for Dinamo Zagreb, but he thinks it was the right choice.
As we reported he would, Robbie Burton completed a permanent transfer from Arsenal to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old midfielder takes the number four shirt at the club responsible for midfielders like Luka Modric and Dani Olmo in recent years.
The transfer came a bit out of nowhere, though it makes sense. After pushing for first-team chances with Arsenal in pre-season, Burton was still waiting on a senior debut. The level of competition in midfield made progression difficult.
Speaking to the Croatian media, Burton admits the decision to leave took many by surprise.
“Everyone was shocked (at Arsenal), but I think this is the best option,” Burton said. “I feel part of the club here and I hope to successfully defend these colours.
“Dinamo introduced me to their project and I think this is the best move for my career. It is my first time in Zagreb and I can say that the city is as beautiful as I can see.
“When it comes to Dinamo players, I’ve heard of Dani Olmo. I hope that in the future I will achieve what he has.”
Dinamo and Burton already got a first-hand look at each other in December. The then-Arsenal midfielder started for the u23s in a dramatic 3-2 win over his new side. It was a game of twists and turns, requiring a 95th-minute winner from the Gunners.
Clearly, the away side appreciated Burton’s performance in that match. With any luck, he’ll make it into their first team in the near future.
