Feyenoord are trying to extend the contract of Orkun Kökcü amid interest from Arsenal and Chelsea, according to reports in the Netherlands.
Voetbal International report that Arsenal have been following Kökcü for a while now, as well as Chelsea and a number of Turkish clubs, due to the player’s Turkish nationality. As a result, Feyenoord are trying to extend his contract.
The player’s current deal lasts until 2023, so he’s not exactly out the door just yet. At the same time, it’s clear why Feyenoord want a talented 19-year-old tied down for longer, particularly in terms of protecting his transfer value.
Kökcü himself reportedly wants his club to get a good return from his transfer, but also wants to do the best thing for his own development. For now, that probably means another season in the Netherlands. Whether he extends is another matter.
Arsenal scouts reportedly first watched Kökcü on his debut, back in 2018. Most recently, further reports suggested the club were considering a £15m summer move.
Kökcü has three goals and five assists in 32 appearances from midfield this season. He’s hitting form right now, with four of those goal contributions coming in his last five league games.
Arsenal could be in the market for an attacking midfielder this summer. Dani Ceballos may well return to Real Madrid, and Mesut Özil will be in the final year of his deal. The club have to figure out if Kökcü is ready and willing to leave Feyenoord now.
