The ankle injury Lucas Torreira picked up against Portsmouth is likely to rule him out for the rest of the season, but he might make it back for Copa America.
Arsenal report that the injury to Torreira has a right ankle fracture. Whilst the player is still receiving ‘continual assessments’, he should be out for between eight to 10 weeks.
That leaves his return date between May 4th and May 18th. The former estimate could see the midfielder return in time for Aston Villa and Watford, the latter estimate would rule him out of the Premier League season altogether.
If Arsenal made the FA Cup final, that’s on May 23rd. So it’s still possible he could return in time for that. It certainly wouldn’t qualify as an ideal comeback match though.
The good news for Torreira is that he should be fit by June 12th, when this summer’s Copa America kicks off.
He’s going to miss the upcoming international break this month, but it’s not like he was on the fringes of the Uruguay squad. He’s a regular starter and shouldn’t need to audition for his spot.
For Arsenal, it’s a couple of months without one of their senior midfielders. That’s definitely a blow, particularly given Granit Xhaka and Matteo Guendouzi never seem to make a strong partnership.
Dani Ceballos really needs to play well and stay fit.
