Mikel Arteta has hinted Henrikh Mkhitaryan could yet have a future at Arsenal, despite having been deemed surplus to requirements by his predecessor.

Unai Emery sanctioned the departure of the Armenia international back in the summer, following the arrivals of record signing Nicolas Pepe and teenager Gabriel Martinelli.

Mkhitaryan’s season-long loan spell at Roma has been interrupted by injury, but the former Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund has displayed some of his best form for several years in recent weeks and scored twice in his last three matches for the Serie A side.

Reports last month claimed Roma wanted to sign the player on a permanent basis but were unwilling to meet Arsenal’s £20million valuation, meaning the 31-year-old could reluctantly be forced into returning to north London.

Arteta has resurrected the careers of Shkodran Mustafi and David Luiz since his appointment and has not yet ruled out the prospect of Mkhitaryan playing a part in his side next season.

‘It’s a possibility that we have and will consider,’ said Arteta.

‘I always liked him, he is the kind of player who can fit in any team when he is at his best.

‘He needs to do it consistently and here he had moments and that’s what we need to assess.

‘Miki is doing really well in recent games. We know the player he’s been, we know his past, and we need to have all the information to make the right decision.’
