Pep Guardiola has praised Mikel Arteta’s start at Arsenal and insists his former assistant at Manchester City does not need to ask for advice.
Arteta left City to become Unai Emery’s permanent replacement in December and the Gunners have suffered just one defeat in the Premier League since the Spaniard took charge.
Arsenal are eight points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, while their means of securing Champions League qualification for next season were dealt a blow after they were dumped out of the Europa League by Olympiacos last month.
But Guardiola has been impressed with how quickly Arteta has put his ideas into place at Arsenal and says the team’s positional play is constantly improving.
Asked how he would assess Arteta’s start at Arsenal, Guardiola replied: ‘I would say incredibly well in the fact that the ideas he’s already implemented are already in the team.
‘His positional game is getting better day by day. Doing that in a short time is not easy.
‘And I’m pretty sure Arsenal will have success in the future with him on the bench.’
Asked how much contact he’s had with Arteta since his departure at City, Guardiola replied: ‘Quite often.
But when asked if Arteta has gone to him for advice, Guardiola said: ‘Absolutely not. ‘He’s an adult, he’s more than prepared, he doesn’t need it.
‘We talk about family, the first days, how he’s settling in the team, the normal things.
‘We talk about friends, ex colleagues, we worked together, that’s it.’
