UEFA want European domestic seasons to finish by the end of June, which is likely to lead to the cancellation of the campaign.
The Telegraph report that UEFA will tell Premier League clubs they want the domestic season done by the end of June.
They also want the Champions League and Europa League played to their conclusion, and believe all European leagues should restart at the same time.
Realistically, this seems impossible. Coronavirus isn’t even going to peak until June, according to current estimates. We’d need more than part of a month to complete 10 games. That’s if the football restarts right after the peak, which is also doubtful.
Part of the reason for UEFA pushing a June finish is that they want the European leagues to remain in sync, and some countries are too hot to play in July and August.
The issue of potential contract disputes is also likely to play a part. If your deal ends this June, you’re free to leave your club before July or August anyway.
This is edging us closer to a void season. If UEFA say it has to finish by June and that’s not possible, the only alternative is to call it off. We’ll wait for further updates from their conference later.
