Arsenal are planning to activate the one-year contract extension clause for David Luiz to stay until 2021, according to a report.

According to The Sun, Arsenal are planning to activate the extension clause for Luiz to remain with the club for a further year. Apparently, his initial deal was only for the current season, but he had a clause to extend until 2021.

This wouldn’t be surprising, as it’s the same deal Arsenal gave Stephan Lichtsteiner. In Lichtsteiner’s case, he didn’t perform well in his first season, so they let him go.

This time around, Luiz is doing well enough to merit another year. Obviously he had his moments, particularly with the early penalties and the red card at Stamford Bridge. In general, he’s playing well enough to make himself a starter, though.

The 32-year-old is up to 32 appearances for the season so far. He has a couple of goals an assist in the recent win over Everton. Luiz even wore the captain’s armband against Portsmouth this month.

One more year is probably wise, while Arsenal sort out their defensive situation in the transfer market.

Luiz is currently forming a new centre-back partnership with loan signing Pablo Mari. He told the media in February all the good things he heard about Mari before the move.
