RB Leipzig sporting director Markus Krosche warns Dayot Upamecano to take his time deciding his future, ahead of a potential summer transfer.
The Leipzig director was talking to Kicker this week about the fate of the club’s 21-year-old centre-back. According to reports in recent months, Arsenal are still chasing the defender ahead of this summer. They reportedly failed with a €60m offer in 2019.
Arsenal aren’t the only club in for Upamecano, with FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich for competition. The player’s contract expires in 2021, so if he doesn’t extend, Leipzig are likely to cash in. Krosche suggested it’s a decision Upamecano should think hard about.
“This is a far-reaching decision for a player. He should take his time with that”, Krosche told Kicker (via Football.London).
“He has to be clear about exactly what he is going to do, how he sees his future. Maybe that has changed a bit as a result of the new situation [coronavirus].”
It’s certainly true that the coronavirus situation is messing with everyone’s plans. We don’t even know when the transfer window will open or close, with a high likelihood matches will still be going on when it was meant to open on July 1st.
Then, depending on how the season actually ends, we may see very different outcomes for individual clubs. Arsenal are a prime example, with qualification for European competition in the balance.
At this stage, it’s impossible to say what might happen with Upamecano in the summer.
