Mikel Arteta says Arsenal are planning for a number of different scenarios in the upcoming transfer window, depending on various factors beyond their control.

Speaking to Sky Sports News from home, Mikel Arteta discussed the footballing situation as it stands. Everything is in limbo at the moment, with no set return date for match action. In turn, this makes it hard to predict what will happen with the transfer window.

The dates of the window will almost certainly change. But what will they change to? How much money will be available? Will players’ contract situations become different after the long break? Arteta says they’re planning for multiple eventualities.

“I am planning (for) two or three different scenarios that we can face,” Arteta explained. “Depending on (which) one of those three, we will be able to do more, less or nothing. We don’t know, we have to react daily to that.

“We don’t know the financial situation what it’s going to be, we don’t know what the rules (will be), the timing, we don’t know the window. It’s so many things we cannot control at the moment.”

If the rest of the current season takes place in June and July, they may just delay the window a little. Rather than opening at the start of July, it could start midway through the month with minimal consequences.

It could end up a lot more complicated than that, though. If the season doesn’t play out at all, there may be a lot less money available to work with. If football doesn’t return until later than June, we’ll obviously have to wait longer for transfers.

There’s also the possibility leagues return earlier/later in England than in other countries. If some countries restart in June but others don’t until August or cancel their campaign completely, when do we hold a window that suits everyone?

It’s not an easy problem to solve. All Arsenal can do is plan for as many eventualities as possible.
