Manchester United and Manchester City are the latest teams to join Arsenal in the race to sign Dayot Upamecano this summer, according to reports.
Sky Sports News report that both Manchester United and Manchester City hold an interest in RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano. City are hoping to sign two new centre-backs in the summer window, whilst United are looking for one.
Sky also mention the links to Arsenal, but they suggest the Gunners might no longer pursue a deal given the arrival of William Saliba and the option to make Pablo Mari’s move permanent.
From outside the Premier League, Bayern Munich also get a mention. We’ve previously covered the links between Upamecano and Real Madrid, so he certainly doesn’t lack top clubs after him.
Upamecano is about to enter the final year of his contract, at which point he has a £52.5m (€60m) release clause. Bild reported that Arsenal bid that exact amount last summer.
It’s worth bearing in mind that circumstances changed over the months since then, though. Upamecano’s contract got closer to its end and Arsenal do have Saliba arriving. Plus, the coronavirus shutdown hit all the big clubs financially.
Paying €60m now would certainly be a bigger investment than it was last year.
