Sokratis Papastathopoulos is expecting to move on from Arsenal this summer, according to a report, after just two years with the club.
Football.London report that Sokratis is expecting Arsenal to sell him on this summer. He’s among a number of defenders with uncertain futures, as Shkodran Mustafi is available to the right buyer, David Luiz needs to extend his contract and Pablo Mari is still only on loan for now.
This news doesn’t exactly come as a surprise. Sokratis is 32 years old and far from a nailed-on starter at this point. Since Emery’s departure, he’s only made the starting lineup in seven of 15 league games.
More than that, the few appearances he did make under Mikel Arteta in all competitions mostly came at right-back. That’s still the case even in the most recent friendlies, as he featured against both Charlton and Brentford from the full-back position.
As he comes towards the latter days of his professional career, with just a year left on his current Arsenal deal, he’s playing infrequently and out of position at a club with too many centre-backs. He’s an obvious candidate for a sale.
The question is really just whether there’s a buyer willing to pay a decent fee in the current market.
