Angel Gomes will leave Manchester United this summer, after vague rumours linking the midfielder to Arsenal earlier this year.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suggested 19-year-old Gomes will leave when his contract ends this week.
“I’ve not heard from him last night or this morning,” Solskjaer said. “So it seems like they haven’t managed to agree anything. The answer is probably short – yes (he’ll leave).”
Last month, the Daily Mail claimed Arsenal were one of many teams monitoring the teenager. They face competition from the likes of Barcelona, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea.
The Gunners would have to pay a compensation fee to sign Gomes, despite him reaching the end of his contract. This is normal when signing a young player from another English side’s academy. But it would still come to much less than a normal transfer fee.
Gomes probably wants out due to his lack of senior gametime (just 3 starts as he closes in on his 20th birthday) and Manchester United’s failure to achieve promotion to the top u23 division. Another year of second-tier u23 football isn’t exactly appealing.
The midfielder has 10 goals and seven assists in 25 Premier League 2 appearances, but is yet to get off the mark in the senior game. He’s an England u20 international and clearly a talent. Perhaps he’ll look to try his luck outside English football now, though.
