Arsenal may make a small profit after Juventus sold former Gunner and academy graduate Stephy Mavididi to Montpellier this week.

Juventus announced on Tuesday that they’re selling Stephy Mavididi to Montpellier for a fee of €6.3m, payable over the next three financial years. However, they added that this would only come to €4m after ‘solidarity contributions’.

At least part of this additional €2.3m will reportedly end up with Arsenal, either due to a sell-on clause or a compensation payment after the Gunners trained him up with the academy since the age of 12.

The amount won’t be anything substantial, and it’s mostly just good to see Mavididi getting a good transfer. Leaving Arsenal for Juventus was a bit of a strange one, as it was always a bit unlikely the young striker would progress to their first team.

The 22-year-old spent the season on loan with Dijon, scoring eight goals and assisting two. He actually spent as much time out wide as up front for the Ligue 1 side.

Unfortunately, the campaign ended rather acrimoniously, with the Dijon president upset that Mavididi wouldn’t fully commit to the club. No major problem for the former Gunner, who will now move up the table to Montpellier.

The permanent move to another good club in one of Europe’s top-five leagues is positive for Mavididi. It’s now up to him to push on, without the safety net of a parent club to go back to.
