Clubs and the Premier League will meet this week to discuss the start of next season with the 19/20 campaign still underway.
Right about now, we should all be watching Euro 2020 with Arsenal off a on pre-season tour. As it stands, we’re just finished playing Leicester, still clinging on to the slim hope of making the Champions League.
That obviously means next season won’t be starting until far later than we’ve become used to, with the dates 26 August and 12 September being put forward as the most likely options.
Back when I was a kid, that’s when seasons used to start. With so many more matches to be played now, even those late dates would leave the Premier League short of a few weekends to fit everything in.
As a result, they want the FA Cup third and fourth round moved to midweek and replays scrapped from that point as well.
Whether the FA agrees or not remains to be seen but they are said to be open to scrapping replays.
They do, however, want to hold onto to least one weekend for the FA Cup due to the extra broadcast revenue those games would bring in.
