Konstantinos Mavropanos completed a move to VfB Stuttgart on Thursday, after signing a new contract with Arsenal.

Arsenal announced that Konstantinos Mavropanos signed a new contract with the club following the conclusion of his loan spell at FC Nürnberg, before moving out on another loan to VfB Stuttgart.

This isn’t exactly a surprise move, as rumours in the last few days strongly linked him to a second loan to Germany and specifically a reunion with Sven Mislintat at Stuttgart. The Arsenal contract extension is a boost for the Gunners, though.

With the extension, it’s actually a very smart piece of business. Arsenal protect the 22-year-old’s value, give him the chance to progress in one of Europe’s top-five leagues, and put off a potential permanent sale for next summer when we’re hopeful of a stronger market.

Stuttgart, in particular, make sense as a destination. As mentioned, they have Sven Mislintat as a sporting director, who knows the player well from recruiting him for Arsenal.

“We are very happy that we were able to sign Konstantinos Mavropanos for one season from Arsenal,” Mislintat said. “We’ve known each other since our time together at Arsenal, so I’ve been watching his development for a correspondingly long time.

“Konstantinos is strong in tackling, quick to start and suits us very well with his skills and ambition.”

Stuttgart were in the 2. Bundesliga with Nürnberg this season. They would’ve got a close look at Mavropanos when they scouted potential opponents. So they know what they’re getting and hopefully, they have good plans for him.

After the injuries and all the time on the sidelines waiting for chances with Arsenal, Mavropanos’ career finally seems to be getting going. The loan to Nürnberg went well, and now he’s looking forward to another.

“Switching to VfB is a new challenge in my career,” Mavropanos said. “I thank the management and the trainer for the trust they have placed in me. My goal is to return this trust with good performances and to do my part for a successful VfB season.”
