Dayot Upamecano announced his new three-year deal with RB Leipzig on Friday, putting the transfer rumours to bed for another year.

On Friday morning, RB Leipzig announced their new three-year deal for Dayot Upamecano. The media previously linked Arsenal to the centre-back, after the Gunners reportedly made a substantial bid for him last year.

There is some good news, though. According to Bild, this deal will include a €50m release clause, coming into effect next summer. If Arsenal still want him then, and they’ve recovered financially from the current situation, it’s not impossible they’ll go back.

Upamecano is only 21, after all. It’s not like another year starting regularly for a Bundesliga side is going to hurt his development. With the release clause, there’s no fear of a substantial increase in his market value either.

Whilst it’s a blow for Arsenal’s chances of landing the defender right now, it may well actually make it more likely in the long term. Particularly if Mikel Arteta’s side can prove they’re on a better track next season.

Upamecano is up to 36 appearances for the current campaign. He still has the Champions League quarter-finals with Leipzig to come next month.
