Two lower-league clubs are already making offers for Arsenal academy midfielders Ben Sheaf and Matt Smith, according to reports.

Alan Nixon reports that there’s big interest in Arsenal academy players Ben Sheaf and Matt Smith.

Sheaf, 22, spent the season on loan with Doncaster Rovers. After catching the eye at Coventry City, they’re making a six-figure bid to sign him on a permanent deal.

Coventry boss Mark Robins is reportedly a big fan of the midfielder, who can also play at centre-back. The former League One side achieved promotion to the Championship this season, so it would be a good move for the player.

Meanwhile, Swindon Town are in for a loan for 19-year-old Matt Smith, who picked up an FA Cup winner’s medal on Saturday. Swindon also achieved promotion this campaign, from League Two to League One.

Arsenal have the beginnings of a relationship with Swindon, loaning them Daniel Ballard last season. That one didn’t quite work out, as a serious injury forced Ballard back to North London early. But that hasn’t put the side off pushing for another loan move.

I don’t think I could really argue with either transfer. Sheaf really needs a permanent move now, after a couple of recent loans. Smith looks like a talent in the youth teams, and Arteta clearly likes him, but he needs senior minutes.
