Arsenal could tempt Roma with a swap deal involving out of favour midfielder Lucas Torreira.

The Uruguay international featured prominently during the early weeks of Mikel Arteta’s reign as he returned to his favoured defensive midfield position having been deployed in a more attacking role by Unai Emery.

Torreira suffered a serious ankle injury during an FA Cup win over Portsmouth back in March and struggled to win his place back in the side following his return to fitness, with Granit Xhaka and Dani Ceballos forging a promising partnership at the heart of Arsenal’s engine room.

The 24-year-old forged his reputation as a tenacious ball winner with Sampdoria and had been on the brink of joining Napoli before Arsenal intervened following the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Torreira has regularly spoken of his desire to return to Serie A and conceded he has had difficulties adapting to life in England.

AC Milan were reportedly at the head of the queue to sign the combative midfielder but he is no longer seen as a priority.

After an impressive season on loan, the Rossoneri want to make Tiemoue Bakayoko’s move from Chelsea permanent.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma could represent a potential destination for Torreira instead, with Amadou Diawara moving in the opposite direction.

The Guinea international spent three years at Napoli before moving to Roma last summer and enjoyed an impressive debut campaign.

Arsenal have a strong relationship with Roma, who have recently been taken over by Dan Friedkin, and came to a resolution with the Giallorossi last month and allowed Henrikh Mkhitaryan to join on a permanent deal.
