Manchester United made Gabriel Magalhaes a more lucrative financial offer to join them, but the player preferred to join Mikel Arteta’s project.

Gabriel Magalhaes looks to be rejecting the likes of Napoli, Manchester United and others to sign for Arsenal in the coming days, with the reliable Fabrizio Romano confirming the transfer on Saturday night and the Guardian following up on Sunday.

Brazil-based journalist Vinicius Furlan, who reportedly has close links to the Gabriel camp, claims the player actually turned down more money from Manchester United. They made a big, late push for the transfer, but the defender preferred the project presented by Mikel Arteta.

Arteta made his case to the 22-year-old personally and he was clearly convincing enough to get it over the line.

According to Romano’s update, Gabriel will fly to London on Monday to sign his contract. He’s agreed to a five-year deal which will tie him to Arsenal until 2025. An official announcement is expected to come next week.

Arsenal will pay €30m to Lille, even including all add-ons. For a player in his early twenties drawing such strong interest from around Europe, that seems like a great deal.

Gabriel made 34 appearances for Lille this season, despite the early end to the French domestic season. He’s very strong in individual duels, winning a high percentage of his aerial duels and tackles.

The Brazilian also rarely makes individual mistakes, conceding no penalties and making zero errors leading to an opposition shot in Ligue 1 this season.

He’ll need to adapt to Premier League football over the coming months, but that all sounds promising.
