Paris Saint-Germain are offering Arsenal the chance to sign goalkeeper Alphonse Areola on loan this season, according to a report.
The Evening Standard report that Alphonse Areola is keen on a move to the Premier League this summer, offering Arsenal the chance to sign him on loan this summer. Fulham are currently favourites, but that could yet change.
There’s no real word on whether Arsenal actually want the 27-year-old, but he could provide a good short-term solution to the problem presented by the sale of Emi Martinez.
As we covered earlier, Aston Villa are keen on Martinez and recently placed a second bid for him. But Arsenal won’t let the goalkeeper go without a replacement, and they’re struggling to convince Brentford to consider letting David Raya go.
I said at the time that a loan might be the best way to solve this problem. Get Areola in for a year, then either promote from the set of talented academy goalkeepers after that or sign a new first-team goalkeeper like Raya.
With a year less on his contract and in a non-COVID summer, Arsenal would have a better shot at bringing in Raya next year, if he really is the main target.
We’ll have to wait and see what Arsenal think, though. If they don’t rate Areola, it’s a non-starter. Personally, I think he’s a decent goalkeeper, having followed him since his Villarreal days.
