There are conflicting reports on the status of an Arsenal move for Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson, despite claims of a medical for the goalkeeper this week.
Earlier this week, reports from Iceland suggested Dijon goalkeeper Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson was with Arsenal for a medical and to sign a five-year deal to join the club this window.
Fabrizio Romano seemingly confirmed the report, saying Rúnarsson will join Arsenal. However, David Ornstein doesn’t seem so sure.
Speaking on the Ask Ornstein podcast, the reporter did confirm the Arsenal talks and interest in the player. But at this stage, he suggests there’s still work to do to reach an agreement, and no medical yet.
“As far as we know, there are talks between the clubs over a fee in the region of £1m,” Ornstein began. “But I don’t think there is an agreement on that fee, how it would be paid.
“Also I think that reports that he underwent a medical at Arsenal are wide of the mark.”
Ornstein goes on to suggest Arsenal might still move for David Raya. There’s even the possibility of bringing Raya in on a permanent deal before loaning him back, to convince Brentford to do business.
Personally, that doesn’t appeal much to me. If Raya isn’t available this season, I’d rather save the money for other signings and push to sign him next summer, with a year left on his contract and a more stable financial situation at Arsenal.
If Arsenal believe in Rúnarsson, he’s the more logical signing for right now.
