Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny is self-isolating in Cairo, Egypt after testing positive for Covid-19.
The 28-year-old tested positive on Monday afternoon after arriving in Togo with his team-mates ahead of the side’s AFCON qualifier.
Elneny is asymptomatic but he’ll now need to self-isolate for at least a fortnight and will not be able to play again until he returns a negative result.
That would rule Elneny out of at least the next three matches, beginning with Sunday’s away game at Elland Park against Leeds and followed by games against Molde and Wolves.
The midfielder has had a surprise renaissance this season, becoming a first-team regular again under Mikel Arteta after a spell away on loan.
The news was confirmed first by Elneny’s representative on Twitter on Monday evening.
‘Elneny positive Cov19 get well soon,’ tweeted Alan Nazmy. The Egyptian FA then followed up to confirm the positive result and that Elneny will now self-isolate under Covid-19 protocols.
‘The results of the medical swabs conducted by the national team upon arrival in Togo showed negative all except for Arsenal player Mohamed Elneny, whose result appeared positive without any symptoms,’ the EFA said on Facebook.
‘The player immediately began to implement the special medical protocol for people infected with Covid-19’.
