Chris Sutton has branded Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the ‘worst signing’ of the summer after the Arsenal captain penned a new deal.
Aubameyang decided against leaving the Emirates at the end of last season after a late surge from Mikel Arteta’s side saw them qualify for Europe via the FA Cup.
He put pen to paper on a new three-year deal believed to be worth around £250,000-a-week but he has struggled to replicate his best form since.
The Gabon international has scored just one goal from open play in the Premier League this season – with another coming from the spot against Manchester United – and he failed to register a single attempt on target during a 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa.
Sutton, the former Chelsea striker, has been desperately unimpressed with his performances in the 2020/21 campaign. And he labelled Aubameyang’s new deal as the worst piece of summer business out there.
‘The worst? We were all told that Arsenal tying down Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would be like a new signing and, after a lot of hullabaloo, he put pen to paper,’ he told the Daily Mail.
‘Since then, he’s scored once from the spot. ‘If fans were at stadiums, he wouldn’t exactly have had them on the edge of their seats.’
Lee Dixon, however, thinks Aubameyang’s team-mates have to do more to help their captain out of his slump.
‘If you’re not getting the service or the opportunities to score and the weight of the goals is all on your shoulders – some players relish it,’ the former Arsenal right-back told TalkSport.
‘You’ve got to keep him bubbling away, give him everything he needs to perform.
‘That means chances on the pitch, getting the balls into channels where he makes the runs.
‘At the moment there is so much pressure on him because nobody else in the team scores goals really. And that’s a big weight to carry.’
