Emiliano Martinez has sent a classy message to his former club Arsenal after Aston Villa’s resounding 3-0 victory over the Gunners on Sunday night.

The Villa goalkeeper went up against his old side for the first time since leaving the Emirates back in the summer.

Martinez had little to do between the sticks as Arsenal were restricted to just two shots on target as they once again struggled to create clear cut chances.

Ollie Watkins’ double after Bukayo Saka’s own goal wrapped up the three points for Dean Smith’s side as they climbed to sixth place in the Premier League table.

Martinez was sold to Villa in the summer in a deal worth £20million after Mikel Arteta opted to stick with Bernd Leno as his first-choice goalkeeper.

The 28-year-old spent 10 years at the north London club and finally broke into the first team towards the end of last season, but his excellent displays and key involvement in FA Cup and Community Shield triumphs weren’t enough to nail down the No.1 spot.

Speaking after Villa’s win, Martinez admitted he still holds the utmost respect for Arsenal and backed his former side for success in the near future. ‘It’s a mix of emotions to be honest,’ Martinez said. ‘Two months ago I was lifting two trophies with them, I’d been at Arsenal for 10 years.

‘When I play against them now I just want to win, I’m a winner, I’m Argentinian. ‘I respect them, I respect the manager’s ambitions as well. I think they’re going to do really well in the next few years and I’m so happy to see them.’
