Arsenal’s players were involved in a ‘heated’ exchange during clear-the-air talks before their Premier League match against Tottenham on Sunday, according to reports.

The Gunners have struggled for form this season and currently sit 14th in the Premier League with just four wins from their opening 10 games.

Following the 2-1 defeat at home to Wolves last Sunday, Mikel Arteta was keen to galvanise his squad ahead of their north London derby this week.

ESPN report that Arteta invited his players together on Tuesday for ‘a Frank exchange of views’.

But the report claims that after Arteta and his coaching staff left, Arsenal’s players were involved in an ‘angry but constructive’ exchange between themselves. ESPN claim that the nature of the talk between players was ‘stormy’ and ‘intense’.

Arsenal bounced back from their defeat last weekend with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Rapid Vienna in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

The Gunners now face a tough trip to Tottenham, who sit top of the Premier League and level on 21 points with Liverpool.

And Arteta admits his players have been punished more for their mistakes in the Premier League this season. ‘I’ve said before, I’ve seen the passion and I’ve seen the energy in the last few games,’ Arteta said after Arsenal’s win over Rapid Vienna.

‘There were moments that the moment you take your foot a little bit off the pedal, or the moment you lose a little bit of focus in the Premier League, you get punished.

‘The margin that we are losing games is very small and in Europe at the moment you have a little bit bigger margin, and you need to know that.

‘But I’m really pleased with the work that they’ve done today and I think the 11 of the team had a real purpose on the game, even though we have qualified. ‘This is the spirit that I want to see every single day.’
