Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang thinks Arsenal can make Sunday a pivotal moment in the early stages of the season with a win over Spurs.
Arsenal head into the North London derby in the unusual position of being well below their local rivals, at least in terms of league position. It’s an eight-point gap but 13 places between the two teams right now.
Whilst Spurs haven’t lost since the opening day of the season, Arsenal have lost half of their league games. Mikel Arteta’s side are cruising in the Europa League, but they desperately need some inspiration to start to get the domestic campaign on track.
Aubameyang thinks the North London derby can provide that one moment to change the team’s direction.
“I think this is the game that we have to make into a turning point for us this season,” Aubameyang said.
“There’s nothing better than this game to give you that opportunity to turn things around. We have to understand that if we can win this game then everyone will change their mindset.
“A big result in the derby can really lift the players, the fans – everyone. We know it will be a tough game, they are playing well at the moment, to tell the truth, but we have to take care of our game, how we want to play the game, and make it all about us.
“We are waiting for this game – we need to give everything to get the win and change our situation.”
It’s also a potential turning point for Aubameyang himself. After such consistent goal output in his first few seasons with Arsenal, he’s struggling to score in the league this season. It’s just two goals in 10 for him so far, one from the penalty spot.
There’s no better time to bag a goal or two and get back in the fans’ good books.
