Mikel Arteta remains adamant that Arsenal’s woeful form is merely a temporary blip and has denied his ailing team are in a battle to preserve their top flight status.
The Gunners have endured their worst ever start to a Premier League campaign and are currently languishing in 15th place in the table following Sunday’s calamitous home defeat against Burnley.
Arsenal entertain in-form Southampton at the Emirates on Wednesday having lost their last four matches on home turf and are without a goal from open play in the league for approaching 13 hours.
Arteta, who earned a vote of confidence from the club’s Director of Football Edu earlier this week, is confident he is capable of turning his side’s fortunes around and is sure relegation dogfight is not on the cards.
‘I would say that we are in a blip and the way we are losing football matches makes me believe that,’ Arteta replied when asked if Arsenal were already in a relegation battle.
‘But we need to start to win, because if not, you start dropping and dropping in the table and obviously that is not the situation that we want to be in.
‘I think more than anybody (it hurts me) because I am the closest here and I feel more responsible than anybody else about the situation and obviously because it’s not what I want.
‘Everything that we can say, at the end of the day we have to show it on the pitch and get the results. What I would like to tell the fans is that we are trying and fighting to put this right. It’s the least that we can do.
‘We know that it is not good enough and we are doing everything we can to change it.’
