Arsenal technical director Edu has suggested the club are working on a financial settlement with Mesut Ozil to end the midfielder’s time at the club.
The German is the club’s top earner on £350,000-a-week but he hasn’t played a single minute for the Gunners this term, having been left out of both the club’s Premier League and Europa League squads.
Mikel Arteta suggested earlier this week that there would be movement on Ozil’s future in January, with some fans speculating it meant a return to the first team squad.
However, Edu has dampened speculation that Ozil is set for a return by suggesting that Arsenal are working on a financial settlement that would end the German’s time at the club before his contract expires at the end of the season.
‘I talked to him [Ozil], Mikel talked to his agent, I talked to his agent about some possibilities, not fighting, just some things to try and help each other,’ said Edu.
‘The way we see his future at the club, the way we see him here. It’s quite clear.
‘What makes me feel comfortable, which we treat the situation, man to man, no-one hides anything, and Mikel explained to you guys a lot.’
Arsenal have made their worst start to a season in 46 years with the Gunners on 13 points after 12 matches following Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Burnley.
With the January transfer window soon to open, supporters are hoping that an injection of new players could salvage the side’s season.
However, Edu has suggested there’s little money to spend next month and that there’s no quick-fix. ‘People might start to ask: ‘what are you going to do in the winter window?’ Of course we will try to do something but, listen, we have the responsibility to change it,’ said Edu.
‘Don’t wait for someone outside to come inside and be a magician because that’s not going to happen.’
